Job Description:
Database Managers direct the work of computer programmers, database administrators, and other database-related workers. They plan and coordinate activities such as installation and upgrading of database servers and database systems, database design, and implementation of internet and intranet databases. They are increasingly involved with the upkeep, maintenance, and security of a company's databases. They analyze the database and information needs of their organizations from an operational and strategic perspective and determine immediate and long-range personnel and equipment requirements. They assign and review the work of their subordinates and stay abreast of the latest technology to ensure the organization does not lag behind in the newest database technology.

Database Managers manage database resources for their organizations. They often work under the Chief Information Officer (CIO) and plan and direct the work of subordinate database-related employees. These managers ensure the availability, continuity, and security of data in their organizations. They need the ability to lead and motivate individuals and groups of people toward the accomplishment of work and organizational goals with experience in selection, evaluation, and direction of subordinates. The constant interaction with other database personnel, and employees requires the ability to communicate effectively on paper, via email, over the phone, and in person. Strong writing skills are useful in preparing communication for upper management.
