Job Description:
The CSO is responsible for strategic planning, development, execution and implementation related to the company's security of information. The CSO works with the security team to devise the strategic direction. They are responsible for budget expenditures and staff oversight of the IT Security department. CSOs plan, organize and lead the IT Security department to meet company standards and strategic goals and to ensure consistency with the company's mission statement.

CSOs utilize their IT career knowledge of security technologies, techniques and best practices to help position the company for the future. They also maintain and develop a competent, productive and quality conscious work force. They develop and implement processes through orientation, training and education to ensure that the competency of all staff members are assessed, maintained, improved and demonstrated throughout their employment.

They will prepare and control operating budgets and department resources by forecasting future security funding needs of the organization. They also act as a consultant for the organization for initiatives related to IT security development and implementation.

IT career goal-setters looking to become a CSO or VP of Security Services should have six+ years of IT job experience in IT security and must demonstrate superior negotiation and leadership skills, information security technology expertise and knowledge. They also must have a strong commitment to customer service, including a proactive consultative style. A thorough understanding of the connection between electronic communications and the network in an organization's overall information and security strategy is required.

They must have the ability to lead and motivate individuals and groups of people towards  organizational goals. They must work and relate well to all levels of associates, internal and external customers, operations managers and the general public.
